Jeju Bank recently held a 'Financial Fraud Prevention Education' session targeting international students at Jeju National University. The education was conducted with simultaneous interpretation for foreign students at Jeju National University, focusing on cases such as high-paying part-time job scams, illegal currency exchange transactions, and illegal bank accounts.
Jeju Bank, led by Bank President Park Woo-hyuk, carried out this initiative for approximately 80 students from Nepal and Bangladesh. The session utilized simultaneous interpretation to enhance the students’ understanding. The training emphasized major fraud cases, including high-paying part-time job scams, illegal currency exchange crimes (known as "hwanchigi"), and the risks associated with lending bank accounts to others, referred to as "daepo tongjang" (illegal bank accounts). It was stressed that distributing such accounts, even without intent, could result in legal punishment.
To prevent financial fraud, the bank advised students to:
- Suspect advertisements for part-time jobs involving large money transfers
- Avoid illegal currency exchange transactions
- Ensure bank accounts are closed before returning to their home countries
- Inform the remitting bank if money is received from unknown sources
An official from Jeju Bank’s Consumer Protection Department stated, “Recently, international students’ accounts have become targets of voice phishing crimes, with many students unknowingly becoming involved in illegal activities. We hope this education raises awareness about financial fraud. Jeju Bank will continue to enhance various educational activities to protect financial consumers.”
Meanwhile, Jeju Bank is continuously providing tailored education for financially vulnerable groups. In particular, their ‘Senior Digital Financial Education’ for local elderly residents and ‘Visiting Voice Phishing Prevention Education’ for young adults have received strong positive responses.
