Nearly half of the international students in science and engineering fields in South Korea believe that the development and support of programs for employment and settlement in local communities are the most necessary for their employment and settlement in the country. They also expressed negative perceptions regarding discrimination due to language barriers and a hierarchical and competitive culture, suggesting that the Korean government should support creating a social atmosphere that accepts international students as members of society through policies.
This was revealed in a survey conducted by this media outlet on September 19, titled "Demand for Employment and Settlement of International Students in Science and Engineering Fields in Korea." The survey targeted 182 international students from 21 universities with more than 50 international students in engineering fields, based on 2023 data from the Korean Educational Development Institute. The survey was conducted from the 2nd to the 10th over 9 days, with a response rate of 50% (91 respondents). The respondents consisted of 30.8% doctoral students (28 individuals), 31.9% master’s students (29 individuals), 36.3% bachelor’s students (33 individuals), and 1.1% associate degree students (1 individual).
These international students are participants in the "International Student Network 200" (ISN200) event, which will be held on the 22nd at the Grand Ballroom of the Westin Chosun Seoul Hotel in Jung-gu, Seoul, organized by Etooday. The ISN200 event aims to prevent the outflow of international students in science and engineering fields overseas by providing a platform for networking and connecting them with domestic companies to facilitate their settlement in the industry.
